This was the last year with Rusty at the helm of Quarry Ridge, so the pressure was on to send him out with a bang.
We made the call to pick with lower than normal sugars under Rustys tutelage, relying on the fruits purity and lower than average yields to provide depth and concentration. It was one of those late calls which sounds great at the time and then you shit yourself on reflection. Probably not the ideal start under the circumstances but once the fruit was in the sheds, our frowns turned upside down. Bins of shiny, clean, beautifully intact, plump citrus bombs staring back at us with acid for days.
Rusty shocks us every year, learning from each passing season, adapting and working with the fruit rather than telling it what he wants it to do.This year's quality is a true testament to his skills and knowledge of the site. Production: 100% Semillon. Destemmed ensuring whole berry remained, fermented in stainless steel and kept below 20 degrees celsius. Three weeks on skins but a gentle extraction process. Pressed into flex tank and racked twice. Underwent partial malolactic fermentation. Unfined and unfiltered. 10.2%
Tasting notes: Lemon curd and passionfruit with a tad more tannin on the back palate than the previous vintage. Super fresh, but not thin despite the stellar low alcohol. Crisp clean acidity, just like in a great lemon curd really. Best Ackbar since the 2016, possibly best ever, saying it now. Best enjoyed with pavlova. Absolutely no doubt. Just do it, do it now.
