Naming a wine can be challenging. No doubt we will receive a lot of scoffing for that comment based on our track record, but its true. It can take weeks, even months to do each cuvee justice by perfectly matching its profile and story to a fitting name that reflects it.
The creative process is tortuous and takes hours of reminiscing, googling and vinous stimulation. Its bloody tough…..In most cases it would be easier naming your first child.
And then, sometimes everything just aligns and the world feels right and at peace.
So, what do you call a super wine made from 5 varieties from 5 different vineyards? A wine which lets each individual variety and site shine independently but harmoniously combine to create something beautiful and unique at the same time.
You name it after the super robot piloted by 5 space explorers.
Production: 30% Pinot Gris from our vineyard high in the Whitlands hills. This is a beautifully textural wine which spent 2 weeks on skins and was aged in new Hungarian oak. 30% Syrah from Bob Macnamara in the Alpine Valleys, some of the cleanest and most impressive fruit we saw through the 2023 vintage. Whole berry ferment showing bright red berry fruits and plenty of spice. 15% Pinot Noir from the Eminence vineyard, given a whole berry cold soak pre-ferment. It brings earthiness and a fine line of acidity. 15% Sagrantino from King River Estate. Run through the destemmer only for a whole berry ferment and a 10 day maceration period. This provides the plump juicy dark fruits. 10% Barbera from the Cavicchiolo vineyard, treated simply to create a super bright and light on its feet expression. All the wines were settled and racked and combined after blending trials to come together as one for 2 months in stainless steel tank. Bottled unfined, unfiltered with a small addition of sulphur.
Designed to be chilled so get this in the fridge. Aromatics of black forest cake and pepper, with a soft palate of rhubarb with the just ripe plum tannins. This wine is truly way better than we even hoped. Bloody delicious. Throw a bottle in the esky, pop the cap with mates and enjoy the ride.
